Can you make an impact or help other people or affect change while you build up your portfolio?
That’s a fair question. After all, the good that happens to our society is that good that will happen to us. But it is also true that striking a balance between profit and impact is hard.
But here is what I have realized based on personal experience. Maybe it will resonate with you.
For me, a sustainable business model with recurrent revenues and profit needs to be the base to help drive and create impact. This needs to be intentional, additional and measurable. Most importantly, it is about people first.
In Noble Gold, for example, we make sure our bottomline is enough to keep the business going and, more importantly, get people paid. Taking care of our employees is the biggest impact we can make.
This is the same for my investments.
I invest in companies I believe in and don’t invest in companies I don’t believe in regardless of how profitable they may be.
For example, I don’t invest in tobacco companies. I know someone who refuses to invest in any company related to alcohol.
On the other hand, I invest heavily in renewable energy because I know that’s where the future is headed and will give me maximum profits but also because I do think we should shift to renewable energy and away from fossil fuel.
I know some people might think that’s too little of an effort but it is a good start.
One thing for sure is that nothing happens overnight. I do know that our journey to renewable energy can be so full of false starts and not all companies will survive.
That could be true to any cause you support and any investment you make in relation to that cause.
I suggest, start with the cause you want to support. What are you passionate about? Technology? Arts? Environment?
