Do you want to retire in poverty? That was a useless question. I don’t anyone would ever say yes to that.

So take note of these things if you want to NOT retire in poverty. Focusing on what we shouldn’t do can cut through the ambiguity and shine a light on what practices we should avoid.

1. Allowing fees to hold you back

Here is the hard truth. Regardless of what kind of investment you decide on doing, there will be fees. In fact, you might actually actively seek for companies that charge you REASONABLE fees. Part of those fees is used by these investment companies for security and insurance of your investments.

If companies don’t charge fees, you need to ask yourself, how are they security and protecting your investments. They must be doing it some other way and if they are not open about how they are doing it, then it’s probably via means that compromises you. For example, they might be selling your data to advertisers and other companies.

So, don’t let fees hold you back. Just make sure they are reasonable.

2. Not planning for taxes

Like fees, taxes are a material drag on returns. But taxes are more insidious because we have less control over them, and they are hidden when evaluating portfolio performance.

In fact, they’re typically greater than or equal to the total investment management fees. Yet, the wealth management industry tends to pay lip service to the tax drag on a portfolio. They use sophisticated software to track investment performance, but tax drag isn’t something they report.

So, optimize for after-tax returns.

One way of doing this by doing a Roth instead of a traditional IRA. That means you will have to pay taxes on the year you made the contribution. When you cash out, you will not pay fees for capital gains.

We also suggest, as always, for you to consult financial advisors and accountants.

3. Try to time the market

There are a lot of people who predict market developments. Some of them are often right. Most are often wrong. But even the ones who are often right, are right all the time. It would be nice if we only follow their advice when they are right. Unfortunately, we will not know until it’s all done. By then, it’s too late.

Don’t make changes to your portfolio based on predictions of these market experts. Especially if their predictions are based on feelings of fear or greed. This is called timing the market.
