Welcome to Noble Gold’s National Debt Series. We discussed why the US goes into debt, how we borrow money and how we pay for it, who is responsible for it, and how it can affect us.
The government borrowing money is an investment opportunity for us because we can actually lend our own government money. How? By buying treasury bonds.
Treasury bonds are fixed-income investments issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. When you buy a bond from the government, the government guarantees that they will pay you the interest in regular intervals or when it matures.
They are the safest investments in the world since the U.S. government guarantees them. This means they are low risk but they also have the lowest interest rates of any fixed-income security.
So what are the differences?
It’s the length of maturity.
Treasury bills are issued for terms of less than a year.
Treasury notes are issued for terms of two, three, five, seven, and 10 years
Treasury bonds are issued for terms of 30 years.
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) have different terms: 5, 10, and 30 years. The Treasury Department increases its value if inflation rises.

You can buy Treasuries three ways:
A- a noncompetitive bid auction. If you are willing to accept any yield, this is for you. This is the method most individual investors use. They can go online to TreasuryDirect-dot-com to complete their purchase.
B- a competitive bidding auction. If you are set on a yield rate, this is for you. You must go through a bank or broker.
C- the secondary market. This is where Treasury owners sell the securities before maturity. The bank or broker acts as a middleman.
You also must remember one more thing – Treasury yield is linked to the market price. Assuming you buy bonds now with a 10% yield and then one year from now, you want to buy more. There is no guarantee they will still be offering 10% yield. They may be offering 5%. You won’t be able to buy old bonds.
That’s treasuries for you.
If you are looking for a safe and low risk investment, check it out. You may also want to watch the last part of our series. We will discuss which asset could play an important role in your portfolio if you want to make sure you are secured when you retire.
