We all want to build wealth. It’s the great American dream. We all want to build a life of comfort where we can do whatever we want, work only when we want and still afford anything we want, from necessities to luxuries.

Many favor investing in stocks because it has proven that it goes up in value overtime. I’ll be the first one to say that’s true. If you are going for long-term investment, stocks are a good option.

There is also a level of ownership. As a stockholder, you own a business; as that business gets bigger and more profitable, and as the global economy grows, you own a business that becomes more valuable. In many cases, shareholders also earn a dividend.

We can use the past dozen years as an example. Even across two of the most brutal recessions in history, the market has held up its value.

But it shouldn’t be the only investment you are into because it’s not all strength. It has disadvantages.

1- Volatility: Stock prices can swing broadly over very short periods. This creates risk if you need to sell your stocks in a short period of time.

2- Permanent losses: Stockholders are business owners, and sometimes businesses fail. If a company goes bankrupt, bond owners, contractors, vendors, and suppliers stand to get repaid first. Stockholders get whatever — if anything — is left.

The best way to mediate risk is to own a diversified investment portfolio. Get into tax-advantaged investments like IRA or 401K.

More importantly, know what your goal is and that’s not the same for everyone.

For example, if you have a kid heading off to college in a year or two, or if you’re retiring in a few years, your goal should no longer be maximizing growth. You should be protecting your capital. It’s time to shift the money you’ll need in the next several years out of stocks, and into assets that may not yield as much growth but will be.

If your goals are still years and years in the future, you can do wealth building investments.

I am well-diversified. I have some in stocks, dividends, bonds, 401K. I also have a risky pile. I still have some years ahead of me before retirement. I can have time to recover from possible losses. So, I put more than 10 percent in my portfolio.

But one of the best ways to avoid permanent losses is to own a hedge. A hedge is an asset that stores the value of your wealth. It should not move in the same direction and same time as your other assets.
