Where is the world’s largest stockpile of gold? It’s right here in America.
As of December 2020, the United States had the largest gold reserve. We have more than 8,000 metric tons of gold. This was more than twice the gold reserves of Germany and more than three times the gold reserves of Italy and France combined.
The biggest individual holders of gold—central banks, international organizations and governments—are believed to account for approximately 16.5 percent of the world’s gold, holding about 30,700 tons.
The numbers are taken from the monthly report produced by the World Gold Council, which is the gold industry’s key market development body.
But if your question is where is the single largest stockpile and not the total owned by a country – there are two places thought to have the largest stockpile of gold.
First is in New York. About 80 feet below Wall Street lies about 6,350 tons of gold. That’s more than 508,000 gold bars. That should be worth more than $36,576,000,000.00
According to Yahoo Finance, the gold vault in the New York Fed’s basement “is the world’s largest accumulation of gold and belongs to 36 foreign governments, central banks, and official international organizations.”
No individuals or private sector entities are permitted to store gold in the vault.
The vault is able to support this weight because it rests on the bedrock of Manhattan Island, 80 feet below street level and 50 feet below sea level.
And then there’s The United States Bullion Depository in Kentucky—otherwise known as Fort Knox. It is said to hold over 5,051 tons of gold. It holds the majority of the nation’s gold reserves,
The security is so tight that no one has even dared to do a heist. They said there are land mines and electric fences. Guns automatically go off when a laser is triggered. I hope no one sleeps walks to this area.
There’s one guard box at each of the building’s four corners, plus sentry boxes by the entrance. If all else fails, there are 40,000 soldiers, family members, and civilian employees at the Fort Knox Army post. The building also has its own emergency power plant and water system.
Now assuming you manage to beat out every bullet and soldier, you will still be faced with a steel door that weighs over 1300 pounds with a combination of 7 numbers that no single person knows.
