I am pretty fortunate to have been born to a family of entrepreneurs.
My grandfather was an entrepreneur. My father was an entrepreneur. It has really changed how I look at financial planning and how to treat money.
I also know that not everyone has what I have and so I want to share with you some tips and advice I got from my grandfather, father, and other mentors. This is not financial advice. You can, however, take this information and add it to your research.
1. Keep Working
Whether I work for someone or put up a business, I was advised to keep working. Whenever I failed, and I did several times, I was advised to get up and try again. When I succeed, I was advised to do it more and grow. Don’t settle for a single source of income. Do more. Be more.
That’s the best way to guarantee I will continue to earn money to secure my future by reinvesting it more.
2. Stay Invested in Stocks, ETFs, Bonds, and in as many assets as I could.
It’s odd to some that I keep on saying invest in stocks and other assets when we sell gold.
Well, we may be selling gold but service is our number one product. And service means doing what’s best for you. And what is best for you is this: diversification.
Investing in one asset puts you at a greater risk. If that asset crashes, you will crash with it. So diversify to spread the risk.
I am investing in higher risks now and plan to switch to a more conservative one near retirement. This is because I have time to recover from possible losses. I would rather take that chance for greater gains.
3. Have a Risky Pile
Everything is a risk but some are riskier than others.
Generally, the riskier ones offer more gains. And that’s what I want, more gains. I personally invest in crypto. Everyone knows just how volatile that is. I started with 10% of my portfolio in my risky pile but I am slowly growing it.
4. Not everything I buy is an investment but I should buy them anyway if i want it
A home is not an investment. It doesn’t’ really offer dividends. It can go up in value over time but whether or not it goes up fast enough to catch up with inflation is questionable.
I have one anyway. I bought it for the same reason I have clothes or shoes or food. I bought it so my family and I can use it. I don’t feel bad about it because it does have other forms of returns that’s not quantifiable but I also know that I can rent if I want and there’s nothing wrong with it.
I bought a house because I want it and I can afford it.
